The Rotary Del Sol Foundation, Inc.

The Rotary Del Sol Foundation, Inc., organized in 1997, is a New Mexico non-profit corporation and is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Rotary Del Sol Foundation was created to assist the Del Sol Club in charitable fund-raising, receive charitable contributions from Club members as well as the community at large and make donations in furtherance of its charitable mission to worthy community charitable beneficiaries.

The Foundation exists as a charitable investment affiliated organization of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol under a Joint Policy Statement which was carefully conceived in 1998 to delineate the roles and promote cooperative, harmonious operation of the two organizations.

The Rotary Del Sol Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors composed of nine (9) persons who are members of Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol. The persons who are its officers and directors for the current 2006-2007 Rotary Year and who have been elected to serve as Directors for the 2007-2008 Rotary Year appear at the end of this Section.

In 1997, Don Kaufman, the first President of the Del Sol Club and his wife Bonnie, made a generous donation of $10,000 to the Foundation, known as the Kaufman Scholarship Fund, to fund award of scholarships to graduating seniors at Valley High School in Albuquerque from the interest earnings of such Fund. The Kaufmans’ donation was primarily derived from earnings they generated from operation of the snack bar at VHS. The Planned Giving/Education Committee of the Foundation Board administers the award of scholarships under the Kaufman Scholarship Fund Program.

The late Mary Martin, a member of our Club who passed away suddenly in 1999, left a generous bequest to the Foundation designated for the Permanent Fund. In Mary’s name, the Foundation has since created a program for giving known as the Mary Martin Fellowship. Del Sol Club members are encouraged to make annual gifts to the Foundation in memory of Mary Martin.

In October 2000, the Del Sol Club Board passed a resolution which established a long-term goal of the Foundation known as the “2020 Vision”, which is to grow the Permanent Fund of the Foundation, through annual Mary Martin Fellowship contributions, Club fund-raising activities and sound investment practices to $1 million by the year 2020. Earnings of the Permanent Fund are designated to be used for New Mexico childrens’ charities in perpetuity.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors engages in oversight of its investment accounts in accordance with a detailed Investment Policy adopted by Resolution of the Foundation Board with the assistance of an Investment Committee composed of three members of the Foundation Board acting in consultation with an outside investment advisor that is under contract with the Foundation.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors has also by Resolution created a Planned Giving/Education Committee composed of three members of the Foundation Board which encourages Club Members to support the Mary Martin Fellowship Program and has adopted an awards program to periodically recognize donors. The Planned Giving/Education Committee also periodically brings in speakers to Club meetings who make educational presentations on the benefits and rewards of charitable giving.

The Del Sol Club/Foundation fund-raising activities have evolved dramatically in the ten years of its existence from early motorcycle rallies to the annual Governors’ Ball benefit which has been held in the fall. These charitable fund-raising activities, combined with in-Club Mary Martin Fellowship contributions and other fund-raising projects, as well as the Kaufman Scholarship Fund Program have cumulatively raised over $250,000.00 for New Mexico childrens’ charities, and are making a difference in our Community. We at Rotary Del Sol take pride in being a part of this effort. A few of the charitable organizations that have received distributions of funds from the Foundation are: New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches, Cuidando Los Ninos, Roadrunner Food Bank, Noon Day Ministries, A New Day, the New Mexico Make-A-Wish Foundation and many others. A complete list of the charitable organizations that have received contributions from the Foundation is available on request.

Any person or organization that is interested in making a contribution to the Foundation and any New Mexico childrens’ charitable organization that desires to apply for a contribution from the Foundation is invited to write or call:
