Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol 2008-2009

Speaker guidelines for confirmed speakers*

ABOUT THE CLUB

The Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol was founded in 1997. The club currently has about 60 members. The Del Sol Club meets for Breakfast at Garduno’s on the Green Restaurant on Thursday Morning at 7:00. There are three other Rotary Clubs in Albuquerque, the Del Norte, the Albuquerque, and the Rio Grande Rotary Clubs and two in Rio Rancho.

            The membership of our club includes many service-oriented people who are Albuquerque’s leaders in business and professional activities.  While the average age of the audience is over 50, we have a considerable number of younger members as well.  About 35% of our members are women.

            Our President from July 2008 through June 2008 is Tony Pino a local entrepreneur and business owner.  Our Vice-President/President-Elect is Tom Wallis, who is with the Manuel Lujan Insurance Agency.  Our Club mailing address is P.O. Box 93578, Albuquerque, N.M., 87199-3578.  The coordinator for speakers is Brad Sackett. His e-mail address is brad.sackett@sunrisebankabq.com and the Club’s web site is “www.rotarydelsol.org.  The Rotary International website is  www.rotary.org”.

            Weekly meetings are held each Thursday morning (except for some holidays and special occasions) and generally take place at the Garduno’s on the Green, 9401 Balloon Museum Drive, Albuquerque, NM 87113.

The buffet line (no charge for you) opens at 6:40 A.M. and the program starts promptly at 7:00, ending at 8:00.  An example of a typical meeting sequence is as follows:

Ø  7:00, President’s welcome,

Ø  Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation, followed by a song

Ø  “Enjoy your Breakfast”

Ø  Introduction of guests and visiting Rotarians and other business

Ø  A second song

Ø  SPEAKER’S PROGRAM usually starts around 7:35.

§  Speaker will be introduced by either your Sponsor or Brad Sackett.

§  Speaker: Twenty minutes including Q and A from audience.

Ø  President’s presentation to Speaker.

Ø  Sergeant-at-arms behavior modification.

Ø  President’s concluding remarks

Ø  Adjournment “Rotary has been served”

If you are invited to be the program speaker for such a program, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO BE AT Garduno’s on the Green NO LATER THAN 6:45 A.M.!  There will normally be a screen, lab top computer (Windows operating system) and LCD projector set up at each meeting for any Power Point presentations.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT-HAND-OUTS

A computer projection system (Windows operating system) and screen are available.  Please let Mr. Sackett know which equipment you would like us to provide when he schedules you to speak. It is best if you bring your own computer, but we have one available if you don’t. If you need speakers or anything special please let us know ahead of time.

If you have hand-outs they can be placed at each table prior to the meeting.  There are commonly 8 tables of 6-8 members and guests each, plan on approximately 60 hand-outs if you want everyone to receive one.

SPEAKER GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTED PROGRAMS

 The person who recommended that you be a speaker is the person who will be your main point of contact for all the details of your speech including the date, etc.  That person will meet you, introduce you and ensure you have all your questions answered.  We call that person your Sponsor.  If your sponsor is unavailable then Brad Sackett will be your main point of contact.

            Once you have received an invitation to make a presentation, or your suggested program has been approved, the club will need some materials from you to make sure that your subject and professional background are distributed to club members (via an e-mail announcement from the Rotary Club to the membership or posted on the Del Sol web-site) several days before the scheduled presentation.  This means having the following material sent by e-mail to Brad Sackett at brad.sacket@sunrisebakabq.com as soon as you are confirmed as Speaker. Please send an e-mail copy of what you sent to Brad Sackett to your Sponsor as well so that you may be properly introduced.

1)      The title of your presentation;

2)      A color, or black and white photograph of you, in electronic format to post on our club web-site;

3)      A biographical sketch, somewhere around 25 to 75 words, in a narrative format (please, not just a listing of dates, appointments, or job titles), and perhaps a short paragraph that expands on the title of your presentation, and;

4)      The best way to reach you, such as a phone or fax number, as well as your e-mail and mailing address.

A few more points, regarding the actual presentation.  Please remember the time allotted is 20 minutes, including Q &A. Speeches that are read are usually not successful.  Refrain from soliciting for any specific product or program, and also refrain from anything that might suggest fund raising for whatever the excellent cause might be.  The Rotary Del Sol has it own processes for annual fund-raising and allocation of such funds.

If you are planning to provide any kind of leaflets or other promotional items, their content must be approved before distribution.  Generally such fliers may be stacked on a table at the registration desk.  Handouts that illustrate aspects of the talk are set out on the breakfast tables, about six to eight per table.  Please contact Brad Sackett at 505-244-8001 or at his email address for advice or if you have any questions.

The Club has a publicity committee that regularly notifies the media about our programs.  The media may, at times, be in attendance during a presentation.  If you need to know whether this might occur, please call the club Public Relations Director, Scott Lardner at Scott@rmstone.com.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF ALBUQUERQUE DEL SOL IS MOST GRATEFUL TO YOU FOR AGREEING TO MAKE A PRESENTATION IN OUR WEEKLY PROGRAM!
