This week in Rotary
On March 28 at the Regular Thursday Meeting, Lt. General Edward Baca spoke on the topic of "The Heroic Efforts of Albuquerquean Jose Quintero, A WWII Prisoner of war at Bataan." Corporal Quintero defied his Japanese captors order that no American flags be displayed by stealing remnants of fabric found within the prison to create an American flag.  He stitched the flag in the cover of darkness.  If he had been caught he could have been executed.   In the last days of the war, when American bombers were over the unmarked prison site,  Jose Quintero used the flag to warn the bombers that there were American POWs at the site thus  saving many lives.

General Baca has visited every state telling the story and displaying the flag.  When General Baca is through telling the amazing story the flag will be permanently displayed at the Smithsonion Museum.
