On June 16 at the Morning Meeting for All Del Sol Rotarians, Brad Lundell of the National Pork Board spoke on the topic "Healthy Pigs Help the Food Supply"
Brad is a fifth generation farmer from Iowa who told us all about modern pig raising. He said it is a four barn process that emphasizes cleanliness and good health for the pigs. One interesting fact was that pork can be cooked safely at 145 degrees with a three minute rest period.
Also the pig manure is recycled into the fields to fertilize the grain crops that produce the food that the pigs eat. He also told us that pig farmers don't own the pigs. They own the barns and get paid for raising the pigs. He currently has 2400 pigs in his operation. Very interesting presentation.
