ROTARY DEL SOL PHASING BACK TO IN PERSON MEETINGS THROUGH HYBRID PLATFORM.

Last evening June 15 at 5:30PM Jeff Weinrach presided over our first hybrid Satellite  meeting after the Covid-19 shutdown. Some members attended in-person at Nexus Brewery and some attended remotely via ZOOM.  President-Elect Ed Robertson outlined plans for the coming Rotary year and informed the Satellite Group about the Officers and Committee Chairs for the coming year.

On June 25, 2020 at 7:00AM at Jimmy's Cafe Rotary Del Sol will feature its first in-person morning meeting since March 12.  This will also be a hybrid meeting with some members at Jimmy's and some participating via ZOOM.  It will feature the Installation of officers and committee chairs for the 2020-2021 Rotary year and a farewell to this years officers and Board.

On June 11, 2020 at the Morning Meeting, Joe Franklin, Track Coach at UNM was the speaker. He has been Head track Coach at UNM for 13 years and was formerly the track coach at Butler University.  He described the difficulties student-athletes have both physically and mentally because of the isolation required by the Covid-19 Pandemic.  Joe also discussed the possibilities for resuming Varsity Athletics at UNM with a possible football game on Labor Day.

Dick Wilkinson, Satellite Member and Cybersecurity Officer for the New Mexico Court System.

On June 1, the speaker at the Satellite meeting was member Dick Wilkinson, cybersecurity officer for the New Mexico Court System. Dick discussed the issues made for business as they have had to rely more and more on Internet delivery of services.  He described how broadband internet services in rural areas of New Mexico are severely lacking which has become a problem for those communities in the Covid-19 Pandemic.  He also told how the tech industry is helping with contact  tracing, computer modeling of spread rates and new technologies in the delivery of health care services. He also described how the Court system has had to adapt to more online court proceedings.

Women and children from the Women2Be-Rotary project in Nepal

On May 28, Christine Glidden, RDS Member and Chair of Women2Be described the project that RDS cosponsored with the Rotary Club of Dhulikhel in Nepal.  The project involved women sewing feminine hygiene kits for women and girls in Nepal.  Christine told how she went to Katmandu and the village where the project was headquartered.  Rotary Del Sol has supported this project with funds which included Rotary International Global Grant Funds.  From all sources over $60,000 was spent on this project which has uplifted the economic well-being of women in that area.  Over 5000 kits were produced.

Then when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, the project shifted to making face masks.  We also heard that day from Shia a Nepalese medical student.

Other projects RDS has funded due to the Covid-19 Pandemic included  the Health Care Heros project to take burritos and Cinnabons to front line health care workers in Albuquerque hospitals.  This was a joint project with member Steve Reynolds and his business Jimmy's Cafe and the Cinnabon stores.

Another project led by Christine Glidden involves taking food, PPE and Medical supplies to the hard hit Navajo  People in the northwest corner of New Mexico.

So, despite the challenges of Covid-19,  your Rotary Del Sol Club has remained active putting service above self

On June 23 at 5:00PM the Rotary Del Sol Foundation Board will hold its last meeting of the year and induct new Foundation President Dave Seely.  All members are invited.

Lets all have a Great week in Rotary putting Service above Self.
