  • Walt Butler – The History of Bars in New Mexico
    • Bars date from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
    • Bars consisted of a front bar with a footrest and counter and a back bar with mirrors, shelves, glasses and liquor.
    • These ornate bars were manufactured by Brunswick (famous for bowling equipment) and Sears Roebuck (who also made prefab houses).
    • Bars were shipped by train or ship around Cape Horn and then by wagon to their destination, usually a booming mining town.
    • The manufacturers trained the bartenders before sending them west.  They were trained in bar assembly, mixology, etiquette, piano and billards.  They were often among the most educated and traveled people in town.
    • A few local bar gems:
      • The Owl Bar in San Antonio, NM – its original Brunswick bar was purchased by Augustus Hilton, father of Conrad Hilton, and is still in use today.
      • The Double Eagle in Albuquerque – home to a European bar that traveled around Cape Horn, famous for turquoise margaritas served with a real piece of turquoise in the glass.
      • The Legal Tender in Lamy, NM and the St. James Hotel in Cimarron.

Board Member Nominations and Elections Processes

Approved May 15, 2024 – Modified May 19, 2025

  • The Foundation Board nominates incumbents who wish to serve another term at the May board meeting each year.
  • Announcement of the Rotary del Sol Foundation Annual Meeting will be placed in the Club Bulletin before the end of May.  The contents of the announcement will include the following:
  • Date of the annual meeting (usually the last Thursday in the month of June.)
  • List of incumbent foundation board members who wish to serve another three-year term.
  • A member Rotarian can be nominated by a fellow club member or self-nominated by submitting a short bio (75 words or less) at least two weeks prior to the annual meeting in June.  The bio should be sent by email to the Bulletin editor and the Club Secretary.
  • All bios of all nominees will be posted within an Excel spreadsheet linked to the Members Only section of the Club website immediately after the deadline for bio submittals (refer to 2(c) above) unless there are only enough nominees to fill the number of vacancies.
  • Member Rotarians will be allowed to vote on-line through the Members Only section of the website.  Voting will cease on midnight of the Monday before the Annual Meeting in the month of June.
