This week in Rotary
On April 30, 2020 at the Regular Thursday Meeting via ZOOM Ryan Mast, Emergency Operations Liaison, City of Albuquerque was the guest speaker.  Ryan, who has an impressive background in Mitigation Recovery Planning with the City Of New Orleans, described the efforts the City of Albuquerque is making in dealing with the COVID 19 Pandemic.

He discussed Planning, Medical Services, Public Health and Emergency Housing.  Ryan said that Albuquerque got ahead of the Pandemic quickly as did the States' hospitals.  He discussed reopening business very cautiously and slowly.  He emphasized the importance of increased testing.

Ryan also told us that Albuquerque has been chosen as a test site for antibody testing.

The meeting went well as Del Sol Rotarians are getting more experience in how to effectively use the ZOOM platform for meetings President Dave Simon presided.

Tomorrows meeting will be at the Satellite time of 5:30 hosted by Satellite Chair Jeff Weinrach.  Guest Speaker will be Jullie Aubry, Regional Membership Director with Rotary International. She will be discussing Innovative Membership Strategies.  All business will be done by 6:00PM to facilitate Julies appearance via ZOOM from Evanston, Illinois.

The RDS Healthcare Heros Support Project has been going well.  Every Tuesday and Wednesday Del Sol Rotarians deliver Breakfast burritos and/or Cinnabons to the Healthcare workers at Albuquerque hospitals.   The project is a Joint Venture between Rotary Del Sol and Jimmy's Cafe and Cinnabon, two businesses owned by Del Sol Rotarian Steve Reynolds.

Another Service Project is the Tree Planting Project in conjunction with the City of Albuquerque.  The first group of Elm Trees were planted yesterday by Del Sol Rotarians .  This project is funded with a District Grant from Rotary District 5520.  As the COVID 19 Pandemic hopefully winds down we will be planting many more trees.

Christine Glidden, Del Sol Member and head of Women 2 Be brought us the following service  opportunity:

Rotary Del Sol and Rotary Dhulikhel has sponsored a successful Rotary International project in Nepal.  We trained and hired 25 vulnerable women to sew 5000 menstrual kits and then we distributed them along with a sex ed class.  A success beyond our expectations and lots to be proud of!
Now these women are unable to work due to a lockdown in Nepal.  These women may be single, single with children, or a few are married sharing family financial support.  Most live hand to mouth, not just paycheck to paycheck.  They struggle.
With the lockdown, our immediate sustainability plans are on hold.  However, with a $300 donation from Del Sol, we could fund a startup that would produce 600 masks for medical workers and 600 for people who simply cannot afford a mask.  This would keep our employees working, some from home, and supporting their families.  And from this startup would develop a sustainable business into the near future.

Del Sol Rotarians immediately donated the $300.00 to keep the project going!!!  Yes, this is Service Above Self!
