This Week in Rotary

Club Meetings

We had two outstanding Club meetings this past week:  Our Twilight Meeting on Tuesday evening focused on our Public Image Strategy and Activities, and was excellently led by our Public Image Chair, Lisa Chavez!  Our Morning Meeting on Thursday was our Club Assembly focused on both the Rotary Foundation and the Del Sol Foundation.  The highlight of the meeting was Del Sol Foundation Chair, Dave Seely, presenting checks to the first Don Chalmers Memorial Grant Recipients:  The Vortex Theatre, the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, NDI New Mexico, Explora, and El Ranchito de Los Ninos.  We intend to make this an annual event in perpetuity through the proceeds from our Club Foundation.  We also had excellent presentations from Mark Abramson on Rotary Foundation donations and recognitions, and updates on our District and Global Grants from Greg Hallstrom, Phil DeBerardinis, and Christine Glidden.  It's often said that Rotary is who we are, and that the Foundation(s) are what we do.  Thanks to everyone for making this a truly memorable event, literally decades in the making!

We'll have a regular morning meeting this week and District Governor John Drusedum visiting our Club next week (9/22), as well as a Twilight meeting on 9/20.  More details on these meetings forthcoming from Secretary Meredith and in our website event calendar.

Club Happenings

1. Rotary Del Sol Charity Ball Vote!

The results from the recent member vote for the Rotary Charity Ball are in, and we voted to continue the Ball in partnership with the Rotary Club of Albuquerque (RCA), whose Board had voted in favor of the Ball contingent on our vote.  We will start working with RCA immediately to identify their key volunteers who will be working with us on every aspect of the event.  We will also start our charity vetting process now that we have voted to go forward.  Thanks to everyone who has been instrumental in making the Ball one of the best fund-raising events in our Rotary District, and to those of you who will be helping out this year!  More to come very soon!

2.  We still have time to register for our combination fund-raiser/volunteer project to support the Ghost Tours of Old Town in September and October, and we would be receiving a nice gift of over $4000 for our efforts.  Thanks to Kent Cravens, the Albuquerque realtors will help us if we need to fill some additional volunteer time slots.

If you (or your spouse, family member, friend, etc.) are interested in volunteering to serve one or more shifts, please complete the poll below to register.  If you are interested in volunteering for multiple shifts, you need to register for one at a time and then the survey will prompt you if you want to enter additional shifts.  We need four volunteers for each shift, and the survey is broken out by those four volunteer slots.  Note that training for all volunteers is required on Friday, 9/23, from 7:15pm to 11:15pm.  If you're having any problem with the on-line registration, please let President Jeff know.

4.  Upcoming Birthdays!

Bill Rothweiler - September 10th (Happy Belated Birthday, Bill!)

Jeff Weinrach - September 20th

Chris Van Dyck - September 22nd

Mark Abramson - September 26th

If your birthday is in September and it's not listed, please let President Jeff know so he can update the Club website and so we can celebrate with you.

5.  Reminder:  New Venmo is up and running for our Club Account (to pay dues, happy bux, lucky bux) - "@RotaryDelSol30", and it will show up as Herman Haase.  If you're set up using the old Club Account in Venmo, please change it.  The Club Foundation account ("@R-otaryDelSolFoundation") is staying the same.

Rotary Happenings

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month.  Our Club has participated in literacy projects for years including mentorships and tutoring.  We have ample opportunity to participate in similar projects this year and going forward.

October 24th is World Polio Day.  We will be working on our polio fund-raiser as we have in previous years; so, if you have any suggestions, please let President Jeff or Club Service Projects Chair Brent Melville know.

District Happenings

1.  District Governor John Drusedum's blood drive challenge is still in effect through January 31st.  The goal is a total of 1000 units collected ("1000 Pints of Life").  Last year, the District gave out four Paul Harris Awards, and will do it again this year for the clubs with most pints donated.  More information on the Blood Drive Challenge can be found here:  documents/en-us/d1f076f4-1ea7-421c-abaa-df7d0e043a7d/1).

2.  Our District will be conducting a session of the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) this Saturday, September 17th, from 7:30 to 1:15.  Bruce Bortner, Bill Rothweiler, and other Club members including me have been very involved with RLI since its inception; and it's a fantastic way to learn more about Rotary whether you are interested in getting into Rotary Leadership or not.  We highly recommend you consider RLI especially if you are relatively new to Rotary and to our Club.  Here's the link to register:

Central Area Happenings

Our Club is part of the District's Central Area, which includes all the Clubs in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho as well as Clubs in the East Mountains and as far west as Grants and Gallup.  We have set up a website which contains information about what is going on in the Central Area including events that we can support.  Here's the link so you can see what our neighboring Clubs are doing in case you are interested in helping them:

Please feel free to call, text, or e-mail President Jeff (1-505-400-1403, jweinrach5520@nmia.com) if you have any feedback or suggestions for future Bulletin content or if you have any feedback or questions about any aspect of our Club.

Let's all have a great week in Rotary putting Service above Self!
