This week in Rotary
On September 3 at the Regular Morning Meeting Mark Freeland, Councilman for the Navajo Nation was the guest speaker.  Mark is the leader of 8 Navajo Chapters and works with the Chapter Presidents.  His Chapters are in SanJuan and Mc Kinley Counties. The Navajo  Nation consists of chapters in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.  Population totals 175,000 people. Mark's area of responsibility goes  from Standing Rock to Nageezhi which is 165 miles.

Mark described Navajo Government.  He works with tribal leaders and with Federal Government legislators.

Mark described the problems the Navajo Nation faces with the Covid-19 Pandemic.  In Standing Rock there are 65 homes with no running water.  Much of the increase in cases on the Navajo nation are as a result of multigenerational living with 3 generations living in the same home.  When young people go to work in cities such as Phoenix they often bring the virus home even though they may be asymptomatic.

So far on the Navajo Nation over 96000 people have been tested.  The Indian Health Service provides health care to the Navajo Nation. Many of Mark's Chapters have been particularly hard hit by the Covid-19 Virus.  For example in Ship Rock there have been 1501 cases.  Mark thanked the Albuquerque Rotary Clubs for their assistance.

Tomorrow, Labor Day there will be a Satellite Meeting for all Rotarians at 5:30 PM via ZOOM.  Guest Speaker will be our Zone Director, Johrita Solari.  Please try to attend as this will be an important presentation.
