On March 10, 2022, Pete Dinelli was the speaker at the Morning Meeting for All Del Sol Rotarians. Pete has had a 40 year career in Public Service including being an Assistant District Attorney, Alderman and Director of Public Safety. He has also been an Assistant City Attorney. Pete is a licensed attorney and has also served as an Assistant Attorney General. He currently is in the private practice of law.
He has his own blog, Pete Dinelli.com. His talk was about the background that led up to the Consent Decree between the City of Albuquerque and the US Department of Justice relating to issues with the Albuquerque Police Department. He gave a very thorough history of the issues going back to 2005 when two APD Officers were killed by mentally ill John Hyde. Pete said this had a profound effect on many aspects of the Departments relationship with mentally ill persons. He said that the incident switched the Departments focus from Community Policing to a "Survival Mode" which led up to the decree. He said that it has effected morale on the department and helped precipitate a drop in uniformed strength from 1100 officers to 850 officers.
It was a very interesting presentation on an important topic.
